Juniors

Penrith Kids ClubPhoto1

Penrith Cycling Club runs the Kids Club – coaching and training sessions for juniors – concurrent with most of our races.  Check the Calendar to see when sessions are scheduled.

The sessions are targeted at young riders from age 6 to around age 14, and aims to teach basic riding, training and racing skills.   Sessions run for 45minutes in the summer, and 75minutes in winter. The group is limited to 30 participants.

Typically a session starts with a warmup, then spends some time on basic skills and race skills, then some form of race (not too competitive) followed by a warm-down and de-brief.  When a junior reaches 14 or over and their skills/ability/attitude have reached an appropriate level, they may be moved up into graded racing – starting in E grade.

Participants need to be have basic cycling skills, a working bike (MTB or BMX or racing-style are all ok, not w/training wheels), and helmet and gloves.  For insurance purposes participants must have a CA Licence – at a minimum a “Ride” membership.  (See the memberships page) .

Participants should meet at the race sign-on area – in the eastern BBQ area, as marked on the map on the Racing page.

Photo6Important:

  • Parents must sign the riders in with the coach prior to advertised start time.
  • Parents are strongly encouraged to attend while their children are participating in kids club.
  • At the conclusion of kids club, an appointed adult must collect and supervise children.

First timers are welcome to contact Frank Merritt or one of the committee with any questions.

Leadership & Child Protection

Kids Club is run by a qualified coach, with Working With Children clearance.Photo4

See the Documents page for details of the Penrith Cycling Club Child Protection Policy

The Kids Club is generously run by volunteers, and while program leaders have working with children clearance, they are not trained in childhood behaviour. If your child has special needs, we encourage you to speak with the coach to determine the best approach for your child. In some circumstances it may be determined we do not have adequate resources to cater for your child.
